  • Slave labour

ok, but how?

Small changes add up to a big difference in your cup of coffee.
If you’re after the precise details, we keep them here…

Our Coffee

Different Locations, Same Coffee
Our delicious ‘Home’ blend coffee is used across all of our different sites.

Why? well, it’s just better for the environment.

It means less food miles travelled and we can eliminate the plastic from the supply chain of a single supplier, making it as environmentally friendly as possible.

Strict Sustainability criteria for suppliers
We operate a strict policy of sustainability for any suppliers we work with.

Not sustainable? Then Roo is not for you.

Check out Our Sustainability section below for more information.

Our Ethics

Certifications
We are working our hardest to become B Corp Certified. We aim to meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. We hope to become B Corp certified as soon as humanly possible.

Electricity
Where we are in charge of our electricity supplier, we use renewable sources from Ecotricty as they are one of the few ‘Green’ energy suppliers who build green infrastructure. They are also the only vegan electricity provider available on the market.

Staff
all Staff journeys into work are offset using Ecoligi. Staff are encouraged to cycle into work by saving money and spreading the cost of a bike, as ROO is a member of the Cycle to Work Scheme

Environmental
What if every consumer on the planet could ask: “What’s my Impact?” Well, in partnership with A Green Story, we can tell our customers just that, using detailed metrics showing exactly how much, or how little impact is made by choosing Roo. Using the same technology, we carbon offset the impact of each individual sale. Evidence of offset purchases are available online here.

Different independent local artisan bakers supply each Roo location. Meaning all of our baked goods come from within a 10 mile radius of our locations. This helps support local jobs, and also reduces food miles and reduces the journeys that our food takes. Our Locations page details which local Baker each of our locations support.

We all know there are milk alternatives that are better for the planet than dairy, so to encourage people to try these, we only offer loyalty stamps to non dairy sales. To further support this, we don’t charge for alternative milk! instead, we offer a 30p discount to those who choose it! Another planet-first decision from Roo.

The thing is, milk is also delicious. So, when you fancy some milk in your coffee, it is all supplied to us in glass bottles, which are infinitely recyclable, from the closest possible dairy to each ROO location.

We made the decision not to stock the traditional soft drinks as their ethics don’t match ours environmentally and socially. Instead we stock LemonAid and ChariTea. The profit from each sale goes to good causes, hence the names!

Our Sustainability

We are single use Plastic free:
Our Coffee packaging is supplied to us without any single use items.

All dairy products are supplied to us using glass bottles.

Bamboo handled and natural bristle cleaning tools.

All other packaging cutlery eg; Stirrers, Napkins and straws are all 100% compostable.

We only use reusable bin bags and recycled blue roll.

We form part of the chain of Refill locations that help combat plastic pollution.

Sustainability
Through carbon offsetting with Ecologi, we help our employees mitigate the environmental impact of their journey into work, so that part of our carbon footprint is thought of. We offset a little bit more, too, so that we are not only carbon neutral, but positive!

We offer a discount for any customer bringing their own cup.

We donate 1% of all our sales to the planet with 1% For The Planet.

There is no Palm Oil in any of our products.

All Roo employees are encouraged to participate in a Bike2Work scheme.

All of our non-toxic biodegradable cleaning products are supplied and refilled by FillRefill.

All of our Edenware cups and lids are completely compostable, and we are working with Recirc to find a single use solution to these.

Any Food that is not sold at the end of the day is sold at a discount, through Too Good to Go.

All the ink used in our printed branded materials is vegetable based.

Our coffee waste is turned into fuel by Bio Bean.

No sachets used – instead we use fair-trade sugar, glass dispensers and a spoon to stir the drink – absolutely no single use plastic at ROO.

All lighting used by Roo is low energy LED.

We are paperless! All receipts are available by email, if requested.

Our Money

Transparency
We’re proud of our transparency regarding finances. It’s the Roo way of doing things. We also firmly believe there is no point people spending money with us if we then give it to a bank or pension scheme who invest in planet damaging companies, so…

Banking
We bank with Triodos. A forward-thinking Bank that finances companies which it believes add cultural value and benefit to both people and the environment.

Pensions
Our employee pension schemes are set up using Nest Pensions. Nest is run for its members and has a strong sense of social purpose.

Tax
Roo is accredited with the Fair Tax Mark, which seeks to encourage and recognise organisations that pay the right amount of corporation tax at the right time and in the right place.

We can still do better!

Yes, we can still improve!
We strive to be sustainable, ethical and environmentally conscious in everything we do BUT there is always room for improvement.

Eliminating plastic and the road to becoming 100% plastic free
We are currently working with A Plastic Planet and are Working Towards Plastic Free.

We are attempting to completely eliminate plastic from our entire supply chain and stores but we need your help to become 100% plastic free. We’ve scoured the web and spoke to our network of contacts, but there are still areas we can’t currently find plastic free solutions.

Other areas we need your help
– Tetra Pac alternative milk caps
– Plastic on compostable cup sleeves
– Cafiaza packaging
– CBD dropper tops

Think you can help us achieve this quicker? Please drop us a line hello@roocoffee.co.uk.We’d love to hear from you on your plastic free solutions and recommendations.
